As Mother Teresa once wrote on a wall where she builds a clinic in West Africa:
People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered,
Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives,
Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies,
succeed anyway
The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow,
Do good anyway.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable,
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spent years building may be destroyed overnight,
Build anyway.
People really need help but may attack you if you help them,
Help people anyway.
Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth,
Give the world the best you've got anyway.
So please come and give a little time in your life and see how you can help. Thank you and hope to see you soon!
Sincerely,
NLVS & GMB

Update on April 25,2009- Re-cap of Friday's meeting & updates
For those six students that came to the meeting yesterday, thank you so much! I apologize for running late and being very disorganized. For those that miss the meeting and did not contact us about before hand, you will all receive an update about the meeting through email and be contacted by Jency inquiring about your absent. I want to remind you all that SU GMB requires dedication and devotion. It is very difficult for e-board members to keep track and arrange meetings with students individually. I know that we are all students and we have many obligations and things to do but please try to make it to the meeting. The meetings this semester normally runs 30 minutes to an hour and is much leant. There is no reason why students cannot contact one of the e-board members of their attendance before hand, especially, if we e-mail all of the students a week in advance. In order for the organization to run smoothly, we require communication between brigadiers.
So far, we have about 20 brigadiers for this upcoming 2010 winter brigade. More students are expressing interest in the upcoming brigade and are very excited to participate. However, these students might not be able to attend it because of the limited amount of students that can attend. If you are not dedicated enough to come to a short meeting (and we will know) without advance notice, then we might be pushed reconsider you membership. This is not to lecture any students but to explain our situation and the difficulties of managing a group of this size.
Friday, April 24’s meeting
- The 2010 winter brigade is now schedule to be between January 4th- 10th. For those that are still interested in the winter brigade, we are still accepting applications. The application deadline will be the last week of September (fall semester).
- Medical documents and sponsorship/donation letters were distubuted during the meeting. If you miss the meeting, please make arrangements with one of the e-board members to pick up the documents this week. These documents can also be found under the “2010 Winter Brigaders”.
- We are asking each brigadier to recruit at least one medical staff this summer. Be persistence and assertive. In order to run a successful brigade, we need these medical staffs! We wouldn’t want to show up with just brigadier then how could we treat patients. The documents will help explain and show that you are a brigadier and not just a fraud.
- As for donations and sponsorships! You can start now! The GMB Brochures are a great way to help you! Donations can also be made online through the BFS account! Each brigadier will have their own personalize page for the donation on the BFS account. This will help you keep track of your progress.
- Please forward your medical documents and traveling documents to Jency ASAP. If you are sending these information over the summer, please send them to:
ATTN: Global Medical Brigades
Jency John
12 Johnson Lane
Blauvelt, NY 10913
- Any other Medical staff documents (i.e. medical staff applications…etc) should be sent to William this summer at the following address:
- ATTN: Global Medical Brigades
William Lam
409 East 69th Street, APT 4E
New York, NY 10021
- Please be advised that these mailing address are only available during the summer. Any information sent from September 2010 (fall semester) on will have a different mailing address. This mailing address will be provided during the fall semester. Please keep this in mind when you are recruiting doctors.
- Emails will be sent our ASAP when the Brigade fundraising Site (BFS) account is create. ALL brigadiers that are committed on going to the winter 2010 brigade should register on the website. This is the national GMB website. This means that once you are register funds cannot be transfer to another brigade season if you decide to withdraw.
- This upcoming fall SU GMB/NLVS will be hosting several fundraising events. Please send us some ideas on what kind of events we can host. Keep in mind that funds for this organization is very limited and since it is a nonprofit organization, we do not obtain any money gained (all will be donated to Honduras).
- NLVS/ GMB will be proposing a fund for grants to Syracuse University during the summer to see if we are able to decrease the money buried for this fall.
- The “2010 Winter Brigade” link is now available for students to obtain necessary information. Please check this link (on top of this page) for any documents that you might be missing or any information that is unclear.
- If there are any questions or concern this summer, please feel free to contact William at (347) 543-8756 or email us at [email protected]
Update on April 23, 2009- Last Spring 2009 General Meeting
There will be a last general meeting tomorrow at 4pm in room 105, Life Science Complex. This meeting is very important. We will be distributing materials and discussing about the winter 2010 brigade. Since this is the last meeting for the semester, it is advise that you attend this meeting. If you cannot attend this meeting, please make arrangement to speak and pick up information from one of the e-board members.
See you all tomorrow. I hear is going to be 77 degrees and 85 on Saturday!
Update on April 14, 2009 - New Section
Please be aware that we will be adding a new section to this website in a day. To minimize the confusion and to make it easier for brigaders to view their obligations, we will label this section "Winter 2010 Brigaders". Thank you!
Update on April 9, 2009- Winter Brigade
After a brief discussion, SU GMB leaders and students rendered a decision on scheduling a brigade. With the interest of students and advice from GMB advisers, we believe that it would be wiser to schedule a winter brigade instead of this summer. Both time and finance was a major concern for most students. As of now, a date of the winter brigade is still unknown but more information will be post within a couple of days. Thank you all for your patience and for those who came to the meeting today!
William Lam
SU GMB president

Update on March 27, 2009- 1st general meeting thanks!
Thank you for all those who came to the meeting today! And for those who missed it, please read the following note on the update version of what happened during the meeting.
I just wanted to those who couldn't make it to our meeting today, we missed you at the meeting and GMB hopes that you can all come to our next meeting, Friday, April 3rd at 5pm at the Life Sciences Complex.
Those who came to the meeting, it was our pleasure to meeting you all. We hope that we will be seeing you again at our next meeting mention above. Thank you for being so patience with us! Thank you!
This email is to summarize what happened at the meeting today and inform anything you have missed.
Global Medical Brigade is a subset of Global Brigade, non-profit organization. SU GMB is partnering up with the New Life Volunteering Society this semester. The national GMB exist within over 50 universities nationwide. GMB' mission is to provide healthcare (at no cost) to third world countries and extending its program to several aspect of education, prevention and recreation of the community. The national GMB and SU GMB have now focused its energy and resources to Honduras, the second poorest country in Central America.
This summer a selective few will be joining on a one week medical brigade to villages near the capitol of Honduras. Joining the brigade will be 30-40 SU/ESF student volunteers, medical staff members and GMB eboard members. The brigade will be from May 25th- June 1st. Everyone that wants to join the summer 2009 brigade will submit a student application by Tuesday, March 31 at 4:30pm at the Biology Department or midnight via email. GMB recruits student volunteers that are both dedicated and committed to our mission. Those who are selected to our summer brigade will most likely to demonstrate these qualities. We do not judge on the bases of GPA or majors. We believe everyone who are willing to volunteer to help those in need are entitled to it.
The student applications can now be picked up at the Biology Department at the Life Science Complex (room 114) or can be downloaded through our schools GMB website at www.sugmb.weebly.com under "applications/documents". Again, all applications must be submitted by Tuesday, March 31th at 4:30 for drop-offs at the Biology Department or midnight for emails.
Now for the financial and requirement aspects of the summer 2009 brigade. All students must be 18 and over to go on the summer brigade to Honduras. Students must have a valid U.S. passport within 6 month from the brigade date. Those who do not have a U.S. passport are required to apply for a visa to Honduras. Applications for the visa can be obtain through the Honduras Consulate, please website the website for more information. The cost of the summer 2009 brigade will be broken down as follows: $650 for in-country cost (housing and food), $500-$900 for airplane ticket (tickets are to be purchase through GMB ONLY. Those who purchase tickets from outside airline companies will pay an additional fee of $100. This is to minimize the volunteering trafficing in Honduras and it is hazardous for GMB to partner with several different airline companies). A minimun of $100 donation for medical supplies that will be sent overseas with our brigade. ( The total cost of the trip is about $1,250- 1,650 but the exact cost will be given when we have a clear understanding of how many people are going.
I know that the brigade is somewhat costly but I want to emphaize that if this is what is keeping you from applying to the summer brigade, please do not! We are also students and it is costly to fork out so much money. However, we can also work out a deal. If students are able to rise more than the $100 minimum for medical supply donation, additional additions will be deducted off the in-country cost. SU Students are recommended to register online at the national GMB website under Syracuse University. A hyperlink will be posted to make it more convenient for students to navigate. This will also make it easy for anyone that wants to make a donation to you able to make donations online. Also those students that are accepted will have a week to accept the summer 2009 brigade trip. We require students to pay a $250 non-refundable deposit (to be pay in check or money order to "Syracuse University Global Medical Brigades".) This deposit will deduct off the airplane ticket cost. This deposit will help you hold your spot for the brigade.
Notifications of acceptance will be done over email before next Friday meeting, April 3rd.
Students are also expected to reach out to any medical staff members and ask them to join our brigade. 80-90% of medical staffs are recruited through students’ family members or friends. We encourage all students to ask anyone that can write medical prescription to join. SU GMB has already reached out to both Crouse and SUNY Upstate hospital and we are still waiting for replies.
Those who are not accepted into our summer 2009 brigade will have first priority for next summer 2010 brigade. This also means that even through you are not accepted into the brigade does not mean that you are not part of GMB. GMB is a student run organization built on those students that want to help others. Because this semester is cutting to an end, we will not be able to do form any fundraising activities. This is also a reason why the cost can be reduced any further for this semester. However, next semester we will be doing more for the financial aspect of GMB to prepare for the summer 2010 brigade.
For any further information, please visit our website at www.sugmb.weebly.com (GMB brochures and videos can also be found here) and for information about the national GMB, please visit www.medicalbrigade.org
Also please feel free to email me any question at [email protected]
Please also contact us for any further questions! We hope to see you next meeting and thank you again for those who came!
